Eko Vet+™ | CANINEBEAT™

What Is Eko Vet+?

Eko Vet+™ is a membership-based clinical decision support solution designed for general practice veterinarians. It transforms canine cardiac auscultation from a traditional, subjective process into a digitally enhanced, consistent, and shareable clinical experience. Members gain access to AI-powered murmur detection and grading support via the CANINEBEAT™ AI algorithm, along with the ability to generate PDF reports for clinicians and pet owners.

What Is CANINEBEAT™ AI?

Eko Vet+™ | CANINEBEAT® AI represents the strategic collaboration between Boehringer Ingelheim and Eko Health. CANINEBEAT™ AI is an expert-validated canine heart murmur detection algorithm and a core component of the Eko Vet+™ solution. It is the AI engine within the Eko Vet+ membership that analyzes heart sound recordings captured through the Eko Vet+ App.

Key facts about CANINEBEAT™ AI:

  • Trained and validated on more than 4,000 annotated canine heart sound recordings from more than 3,400 dogs
  • Developed with input from nearly 50 veterinary cardiologists across 15 countries
  • Detects canine heart murmurs related to structural heart disease with over 95% sensitivity and specificity
  • Uses a fixed, expert-validated model — deployed without open updates so results remain consistent and repeatable across every patient and every visit
  • Algorithm provided by Boehringer Ingelheim. Learn more about CANINEBEAT™.

The CANINEBEAT® AI algorithm was developed, trained and validated with input from renowned experts including Prof. Gerhard Wess, Prof. Jens Häggström, and Assoc. Prof. Ingrid Ljungvall. Valuable contributions were also received from Profs. Sonya Gordon and Brian Scansen for expert sound annotation and consultancy.

How Eko Vet+ Works

  1. Pair — Connect a compatible Eko device via Bluetooth to the Eko Vet+™ App on your smartphone.
  2. Record — Conduct a cardiac exam while the app captures a 5-second heart sound recording. Enter the recording location, dog breed size, and patient age.
  3. Analyze — CANINEBEAT™ AI processes the recording and returns a murmur detection result and supported murmur grade† within seconds.
  4. Communicate — Review a real-time phonocardiogram (PCG) waveform and generate a shareable PDF report for the pet owner, colleague or medical record.

What Eko Vet+ Can Detect

CANINEBEAT™ AI analyzes a 5-second heart sound recording and provides:

Suggestive of MMVD.png
  • Murmur presence — whether an audible murmur is detected
  • Murmur intensity classification (grading†):
    • Soft (Grade 1–2/6)
    • Moderate (Grade 3/6)
    • Loud (Grade 4–6/6)
  • Probable disease etiology — e.g., Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD), congenital heart disease, structural heart disease, left-sided murmur
  • MMVD disease stage likelihood‡ — estimated likelihood of Stage B1, B2, or C+ based on murmur grade
  • Real-time PCG waveform — a visual representation of the recorded heart sounds

⚠️ Important: This is not a diagnosis, only a possible finding. Not all heart disease presents with a murmur. A comprehensive cardiac auscultation exam is recommended. Further investigation, such as echocardiography or radiography, may be needed. Results should be interpreted by professional veterinary judgement and are not a substitute for veterinary advice.

Important Limitations & Disclaimers

  • Canines only — CANINEBEAT™ AI is designed exclusively for use on dogs. It is not validated for any other species.
  • English language only — The app and algorithm currently support English only.
  • Clinical decision support, not a diagnosis — Results are intended to support veterinary clinical judgment, not replace it. The final clinical determination remains with the treating veterinarian.
  • Not all heart disease presents with a murmur — A comprehensive cardiac auscultation exam is recommended in all cases.
  • Definitive MMVD staging requires diagnostic imaging‡ — Echocardiography or radiography is needed to confirm disease stage.

ECG not supported — There is no ECG functionality in the Eko Vet+ app. The CORE 500's ECG features are not available within Eko Vet+.

CANINEBEAT™ AI analyzes heart sounds and classifies murmur loudness using a modified Levine intensity scale.

Murmur intensity is used to estimate the likelihood of MMVD disease stage based on a large, epidemiological canine study. Disease stage classifications are based on ACVIM guidelines. Definitive staging requires confirmation by diagnostic imaging.
